Dear readers,
We are pleased to present the newest issue of the Harvard Medical Student Review. The work collected here asks readers to pay closer attention: to the experiences that shape care, to the questions that emerge in clinical training, and to the evidence through which medicine examines and improves itself.
Trainees often encounter medicine from a revealing vantage point. We are learning its formal structures while also seeing, sometimes for the first time, how those structures meet the complexity of patients’ lives. That position creates space for questions, observations, and forms of scholarship that might otherwise be overlooked. HMSR exists to amplify those voices and give them a durable place within the medical literature.
This issue reflects the range of that work. It begins with art, continues through personal and clinical perspectives, and concludes with reviews of focused questions in medicine. The pieces differ in form and subject, but each reflects the value of sustained attention and the importance of giving trainees a forum in which to develop and share their ideas.
Since our last issue, we have continued to strengthen the systems that support this mission. We reorganized the HMSR website to make current and past issues easier to navigate, improved the consistency of article pages and author metadata, and standardized our workflow for publishing and archiving articles through Open Journal Systems. We also introduced DOI and metadata infrastructure so that HMSR publications are easier to cite, preserve, and discover.
These changes help ensure that trainee scholarship is not only published, but presented in a form that reflects its seriousness and allows it to remain accessible over time. As HMSR continues to grow, we hope to make it easier for student authors to share their work, contribute to ongoing conversations in medicine, and carry their scholarship forward in their academic and professional development.
We are grateful to the authors, artists, reviewers, and editors who made this issue possible. We hope the work that follows rewards close attention and demonstrates the value of the perspectives trainees bring to medicine.
