Safeguarding Gender-Affirming Care in an Era of Uncertainty: Lessons From Massachusetts

Despite Massachusetts' reputation as a medical safe haven with strong protections for gender-affirming care, recent federal policy changes have rapidly disrupted access. This article examines how Fenway Health and other federally qualified health centers were forced to discontinue gender-affirming care for minors, demonstrating that no institution is fully protected from federal policy shifts. The author argues that medical students must resist complacency and actively defend the systems that enable this essential care.
